Check Prerequisites

Install libvirt, Qemu, and Virtual Media Manager

sudo apt-get install qemu-kvm libvirt-daemon-system libvirt-clients bridge-utils virt-manager

Add current user to the kvm group and the libvirt / libvirtd group based on your ubuntu version

getent group | grep libvir
sudo usermod -a -G libvirt `id -un`
# next step is not needed on 18.10 / 19.04
sudo usermod -a -G kvm `id -un` 

Verify ownership of socks files

# group should be libvirt
sudo ls -la /var/run/libvirt/libvirt-sock
# group should be kvm
ls -l /dev/kvm

Check networking

# Server
cat /etc/netplan/01-network-manager-all.yaml
# Desktop
cat /etc/network/interfaces
sudo service network-manager status

ip addr | grep virbr
